The County Auditor is a constitutional officer for the county who is elected for a term of four years from within the county. The auditor is prohibited from serving more than 2 consecutive terms. A County Auditor's primary objective is to provide support for gaining access to fiscal affairs of the Mahoning County Government and report it. In order to achieve this, the Auditor and other staff members carry out a number of tasks including keeping minutes of Board meetings in which the Auditor acts as the secretary, preparation of financial statement and conformity with federal guidelines and programs for tax.

Hancock County Auditor

The office of the Mahoning County Auditor has evolved significantly from just a secretary and book-keeper to a financial manager who has responsibilities that leave an effect on the financial condition of the County Government. Basically, the duties of the Auditor are categorized into 7 main groups – Secretarial, Financial, Advertisement, Tax, Personnel and Payroll, Property Records, and Abstract and Settlement.

The Secretarial duties of the Auditor include providing secretarial support to the Council and County Commissioners, keeping all the Official records, preparing, distributing and advertising. The Auditor further compiles and prepares the budget of all the departments and presents to the Council for acceptance. The Auditor also compiles and prepares the Annual Financial Report of the County and submits it to the State Board of Accounts.

The Financial duties of the Mahoning County Auditor make him the quietus of all the receipts that come into the funds of the County. He prepares the budget for the Council, makes the appeals for tax sale, he makes the sales disclosures, sets the opening tax rates of the County, prepares the payroll for all the County employees, makes payment for all the expenses of the County departments, balances with the Treasurer on monthly basis and more.

The Property Records duties of the Mahoning County Auditor include transfer of all the properties, maintaining GIS of real property, maintaining street names, subdivisions, annexations, combinations or splits and Property Transfer Books.
